PDFs and Acrobat Reader
Some information on the City & Guilds site is supplied using the PDF (Portable Document Format) file type. A PDF is a generic format, which allows documents to be transmitted across a variety of media and computer systems without compromising the layout of the original document. If you are having difficulty viewing PDF files on this site please consult the following list of frequently asked questions:
What is a PDF?
"Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF) is the open de facto standard for electronic document distribution worldwide. Adobe PDF is a universal file format that preserves all the fonts, formatting, graphics, and color of any source document, regardless of the application and platform used to create it. Adobe PDF files are compact and can be shared, viewed, navigated, and printed exactly as intended by anyone with free Adobe Acrobat® Reader® software. You can convert any document to Adobe PDF using Adobe Acrobat software". | Copyright © 2002 Adobe Systems Incorporated. All rights reserved.
How can I read a PDF?
In order to view a document created in the PDF format you must first have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. Once installed, the software will automatically start each time a PDF is opened on your system or the web.
Where can I download Adobe Acrobat Reader?
Adobe Acrobat Reader is available from the Adobe website. The software may be dowloaded free of charge for a variety of platforms, including Mac, Unix and Windows. The size of the download will vary according to the operating system you are running.
Why do PDFs not open when I click on the appropriate links on the City & Guilds website?
Adobe Acrobat Reader may not be not installed on your system. If the reader software is not installed your browser will prompt you to download the file to your hard drive rather than open it. Go to the download section of the Adobe website and download the reader.
