Delegated Authority

What is a delegated authority?

A delegated authority is another term for a City & Guilds Centre, which offers Senior Awards.  Once a centre has been given delegated authority status they are then able to offer our Senior Awards to their learners.  We are keen to encourage organsations to gain delegated authority status so that our awards can be made available to a wider audience.

Why choose delegated authority?

  • Delegated authority provides a cost effective way of certificating institutional programmes.
  • The use of delegated authority will assist the institution in the promotion and support of student and staff training and development.

The use of City & Guilds Senior Awards can:

  • Recognise and accredit programmes of academic study, training and industry based projects.
  • Accredit work based placements as part of a degree programme (eg sandwich years.)
  • Develop closer links with employers and other organisations.
  • Promote student recruitment.
  • Generate income through fees levied.

How is delegated authority achieved?

  • Institutions produce a written application based around guidance documentation available from City & Guilds.
  • The institutions application will focus upon two key areas. Firstly, an outline of the quality infrastructure, policies and procedures as they relate to Senior Awards. Secondly, full documentation on the programmes the institution wishes to link.
  • The application is submitted to City & Guilds and if approved a panel visits the institution to review the written application. The panel members are drawn from City & Guilds Senior Awards committee and include representatives from industry and education.
  • If successful the institution is awarded Delegated Authority for a three year period.
Quality is assured via the submission of a yearly self assessment report and a full re-approval after 3 years.
  •  For educational establishments the awards will then follow the institution’s own quality assurance mechanisms eg external examination, monitoring and evaluation of the awards.

Costs of delegated authority:

To be approved as a delegated authority for 3 years the costs are £5000 for educational institutions and charities and £8000 for all other organisations.
