International Spoken ESOL - International (No. 8985 )

This is a new, reliable and user friendly test of real speaking ability in English, offered at six levels linked to the Common European Framework.
Testing is by one to one structured interview with a member of the centre staff who knows the candidate and so can help them feel at ease. This person – the Interlocutor – doesn’t rate the candidate's performance they just manage the interview and act as a conversation partner. We provide clear instructions and a comprehensive guide to help interlocutors. The test is recorded on audio cassette and sent to City & Guilds where it is marked by trained examiners.
Testing is on demand, so you can choose your own exam dates.

This qualification replaces the Pitman Qualifications Certificate in
Spoken ESOL (8968).

What is new about International Spoken ESOL?

The most important single change in the tests is the introduction of a new level, however there are some revisions to the test format as well. The test is very similar in format to the Pitman SESOL assessment, but has been redesigned so as to require very little reading on the part of the candidate. The aim of this is to offer a fair test of speaking to learners who have a low level of reading skill, or who have difficulty in reading Roman script.

Levels and recognition

There are six levels linked to the Common European Framework. The upper levels. Expert and Mastery, are recognised by many English speaking universities as evidence of language proficiency for entry purposes.
