Cutting, styling, colouring, blowdrying, relaxing, perming… there are many ways you can help you clients look good. So, if you’re fashion-conscious, creative, a good communicator and like to help people feel good about themselves maybe you should think about a career as a hairdresser.
Most people start off as salon assistants, helping out with reception duties, washing hair and learning by watching the experienced stylists at work. Once you’ve been around for a little while you’ll start to learn the techniques of cutting blow-drying and so on. Don’t think that you’ll be cutting hair for the rest of your life though. Hairdressing is a very competitive business and people move up the ladder quickly. There are lots of opportunities to go into management,training or business.
Certificate in Salon Services
The perfect place to start your career. You’ll learn about things like customer service, reception skills, health and safety, styling and dressing techniques, make-up and nails.
NVQ/SVQ in Hairdressing
This will help you prove that you’ve mastered the basics of hairdressing including shampooing and conditioning; assisting with basic styling; reception duties; maintaining work areas; and perming, relaxing and colouring.

Who you could work for:
Salons can be found everywhere from the high street to shopping malls, to hotels and health clubs.
Likely hours:
Daytime, but probably some evenings and weekends too.
Starting salary*:
£11,000 as a trainee but top stylists in prestigious salons can earn over £30,000.

You could even go on to:
Manage or own your own salon. You could also work abroad.
