No. 4 Sir Terry Matthews
Welshman engineers fortune with investments
Sir Terry has been making money from technology since taking an engineering apprenticeship at the Post Office research department at the tender age of 15.
With a personal fortune of £1 billion, the Welsh tycoon originally made his fortune in Canada with telecom company Mitel and then, more significantly, with Newbridge Networks. It floated in 1989 and was sold to French telecom giant Alcatel in 2000 for £4.4 billion.
With roughly £140m invested in Celtic Manor resort, Sir Terry has a raft of other investments in both Britain and Canada through his Wesley Clover investment operation, which has backed 52 companies since 1972.
