City & Guilds honours key statesman - [31 Jul 2008]

City & Guilds, the leading awarding body for vocational education, has awarded Singaporean politician and businessman, Mr Wee Siew Kim, with a fellowship.    He joins a list of prestigious fellows including the former British Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Sir John Major, as well as Ireland’s President, Mary McAleese.

Mr Wee Siew Kim has been a Member of Parliament in Singapore since 2001 and is currently Deputy CEO and President (Defence Business) at Singapore Technologies Engineering.  He has an affiliation with City & Guilds, having graduated with a first class honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College London, a City & Guilds college.

Chris Jones, Director-General of City & Guilds, said: ‘We are honoured to confer this special award to Mr Wee Siew Kim in recognition of his outstanding professional and personal achievements and in appreciation of his commitment to vocational education and training.   This is the first time that this prestigious accolade, reserved for ‘persons of distinction’ who have made outstanding achievements in their field, has been awarded in Singapore.’

Mr Wee said:  ‘The Fellowship is indeed a great honour.  At the same time, it is humbling as there are so many more distinguished Fellows of City & Guilds.  Hence, this conferment should be seen as a recognition of the collective contributions of many of my contemporaries in Singapore who saw engineering as a worthwhile pursuit, and hopefully, for generations of young Singaporeans to come, some motivation that engineering is a worthwhile career.’
